A CHAMPION AMONG
AFTER-DINNER SPEAKERS
Continuing a reputation as a " Champion among After-dinner speakers" Wyn is again in demand for celebrations of St David's Day on March 1st. On the eve of that day, February 28th, he was guest speaker for the Chiltern Welsh Society in England and the very next day a celebrity guest for the Malta Welsh Society. " A heck of a jump between two meals of leek soup, lamb and Welsh Rarebit," he says.
Intercontinental travel is not new to him. Societies in many parts of the world - Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Ho Chi Min City in Vietnam, Jakarta in Indonesia, Washington DC, Houston Texas, and even Satellite Beach at Cape Canaveral, USA - have welcomed his entertaining Welsh wit and wisdom.
On more than a dozen occasions he has been guest speaker in the Peers' Dining Room of the House of Lords, as well as celebrity events at the famous Savoy, Dorchester, Ritz, Royal Lancaster and Grosvenor House hotels in London.
Of the many honours received -"most of them undeserved," he grins - he is proud of being voted King Rat of the Grand Order of Water Rats : Britain's unique charitable fraternity of show-business personalities. Rats spelt backwards is Star - "We call ourselves the lowest and try to emulate the highest," Wyn explains. "A water rat is a vole - an anagram of love."
In its 120-year history there has been a cavalcade of star names voted, each year, as King of the Order - from Dan Leno, Eugene Stratton, Will Fyffe, Sir Harry Lauder to Robb Wilton, Bud Flanagan, Ted Ray, Tommy Trinder, David Nixon, Les Dawson, Paul Daniels and Roy Hudd. But in that array there has been only one Welsh King Rat - Wyn Calvin.
Wyn’s charitable work has become legendary.
He was honoured at a televised
TRIBUTE DINNER by the VARIETY CLUB OF GREAT BRITAIN,
the charity for handicapped and under-privileged children – which he has served unceasingly for more than 30 years.
Wyn is involved with many organisations:
Executive committee member of the Entertainment Artist’s Benevolent Fund.
Vice President of St John’s Ambulance.
Vice President of several famous Choirs, including Cor Meibion de Cymru, the Massed Male Choir.
